History of Sk8 Church
ABOUT SK8 CHURCH
Sk8Church did not start out as a church plant, or a ministry, but with a heart to meet the needs in our community and the desire to follow God. As skaters ourselves, we were already spending a lot of time at the local skate park. Among the local skaters, we began to see tremendous needs, hurts, addictions, and a generation of teens that had been neglected and discarded. Although we had only been following the Gospel of Jesus a short time, we knew He cared about these teens, and that He was calling us to care for them too!
"Then the righteous willl answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison, and go to visit you?' The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'" (Matthew 25:37-40)
In the summer of 2005 we held a very large going away party for some friends. The following day there was a ton of food left over. As Tara was working in the
kitchen, the thought “take the food to the kids at the Skate Park” kept popping in her head all day. Acting on faith that God might actually be speaking, she decided to listen and obey. Buck and Tara packed their suburban with the leftovers and headed down to the Skate Park. They arrived to find a very large group of lost, lonely and hungry teens. They were starving not only for food, but also for guidance, mentorship, and direction. The drug and alcohol abuse were among just a few of the many issues that these teens were dealing with. Buck and Tara related to the lifestyle the kids were living and God gave them a burning desire and a vision to make a difference.
5 years have passed and we still believe that meeting physical needs as well as spiritual needs is required to see lives changed. Each week we serve a FREE meal in a warm, safe, sober environment where kids can have fun and relax. After dinner we give a practical message for living a healthy life through the study of God's Word.
