What does skateboarding and church have to do with each other??
We are often asked the question “what is SK8 Church?”
When Buck & Tara Chavarria became followers of Jesus Christ it wasn’t just a small life change. It was a radical change in every way they were used to living life. A background of punk rock music and skateboarding was hard to let go of and they could not find an outlet for the skateboarding and snowboarding that they loved at church. As Jesus’ incredible love and teachings started to change the shape of their lives their eyes were open to all the devastation going on at the local skate park. On any given day there were drug deals, drug addicts, young kids getting drunk, high, hooking up and engaging in behaviors no one should be, let alone a young teenager. As Buck & Tara started spending more time down there they noticed that the youth were receptive to an adult talking to them, hanging out with them, praying with them, feeding them and loving them. This moved them to bring a free dinner every Thursday night down to the Sk8 Park as a way to just connect and build relationships with the youth. That was 4 years ago and today you can still find them serving dinner to hungry youth every week. When our long winter settles in they pack Buck & Tara’s house to eat, talk about the Bible, issues, Jesus, and anything that comes up.
Jesus was known for dining with “sinners” and “tax collectors”, and members of society that everyone avoided and scorned. He loved the unlovable and taught us how to love the poor, the persecuted, the unloved! There are many youth in Steamboat Springs that our community sees as throw away kids, our underage drinking and drugging is our of control, and there are too many high school and middle school drop outs every year. Our mission is to see that No One ever feels like a throw away! That everyone would have a chance to not only experience Christ, but have an incredible chance at living a fulfilling, purposeful, healthy life!
